Jacek M. Zurada received his MS and PhD degrees (with distinction) in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Gdansk, Poland. Since 1989 he has been a Professor with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. He was Department Chair from 2004 to 2006.
He has published over 370 journal and conference papers in the areas of neural networks, computational intelligence, data mining, image processing and VLSI circuits. He also has authored or co-authored three books, including the 1992 PWS text Introduction to Artificial Neural Systems, co-edited the 1994 IEEE Press volume Computational Intelligence: Imitating Life, the 2000 MIT Press volume Knowledge-Based Neurocomputing, and co-edited eleven volumes in Springer Lecture Notes on Computer Science. He has held visiting appointments at Princeton, Northeastern, Auburn, and at foreign universities in Australia, Chile, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Poland, Singapore, Spain, South Africa and Taiwan. He has delivered numerous invited and plenary conference presentations and seminars throughout the world.
In addition to his pioneering neural networks textbook, his most recognized achievements include extension of complex-valued neurons to associative memories and percepton networks; sensitivity concepts applied to multilayer neural networks; application of networks for clustering, and for biomedical image classification and drug dosing; blind sources separation; and rule extraction as a tool for prediction of protein secondary structure. His other contributions include "lambda" learning rule of perceptron and invention of dynamic switching hysteresis of NMOS and CMOS logic gates.
Dr. Zurada was an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, Part I and Part II, and served on the Editorial Board of the Proceedings of IEEE and of Neural Networks. From 1998 to 2003 he was the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks. He is an Associate Editor of Neurocomputing, Schedae Informaticae, International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, Advisory Editor of International Journal of Computational Intelligence and Applications, Senior Editor of IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine, and Editor of Springer Natural Computing Book Series.
He has served the profession and the IEEE in various elected capacities. In 2013-15 he has served as IEEE VP, Technical Activities (Elect, VP, Past VP). He has been chair of various IEEE CIS and IEEE TAB committees, including the IEEE TAB Periodicals Committee and IEEE TAB Periodicals Review Committee. He was the Founding Chair of the NNC Neural Networks Technical Committee. In 2012-13 he served as IEEE TAB Periodicals Review and Advisory Committee Chair . He served as President of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society in 2004-05.
Dr. Zurada has received a number of awards for distinction in research, teaching, and service. In addition to several best paper awards, his honors include the 1993 Presidential Award for Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity, 1997 Polish Ministry of National Education Award, 1999 IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Golden Jubilee Medal, and the 2001 and 2014 Presidential Distinguished Service Award for Service to the Profession. He is a Distinguished Speaker of IEEE CIS and IEEE Fellow.
In 2003 he was conferred the Title of National Professor by the President of Poland. In 2004, 2006, 2010, and 2012 respectively, he received Honorary Professorships from Hebei University, from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu, Sichuan University, Chengdu, and from the Chinese University of Petroleum in Qingdao, all in China. Since 2005 he is a Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and served as a Senior Fulbright Specialist in 2006-12.
